Controlling your Sleep Sensei

Knob and Button Photo Transparent

The Sleep Sensei is controlled by the knob on the front. This knob also functions as a pushbutton.

Turning on the Sleep Sensei

To turn on the Sleep Sensei, press in the knob once, and the lights will begin to flash. The purpose of the flashing lights is explained in the Advanced Guide. If you don’t press any buttons or turn the knob for 1 minute, the Sleep Sensei will automatically turn off to save batteries.

Start a Sleep Coaching Session

While the lights are flashing, hold down the button for 3 seconds until the light begins to fade in and out. The Sleep Sensei is now coaching. The idea is to follow the light pattern with your breathing; as the light grows brighter, you inhale, and as the light dims, you exhale.

Positioning the Sleep Sensei

If you are a side sleeper, place the Sleep Sensei on a nightstand or bedside table and aim the light directly towards your eyes. You should be able to see the light with your eyes closed in a dimly lit room. If you sleep on your back, aim the light towards the side of your eyes to see the light in your peripheral vision. You’ll probably need to increase the brightness to be able to see the coaching light effectively.

Adjusting the Brightness

At any time during coaching, you can adjust the brightness using the knob. Turning the knob clockwise will increase the brightness, and turning it counterclockwise will decrease the brightness. Set the brightness to a comfortable level that you can see with your eyes closed.

Getting Used to the Sleep Sensei

Most users showed improvement in their time to fall asleep after 1-2 weeks of using the Sleep Sensei, so don’t feel discouraged if your sleep doesn’t improve on the first night! You will need to get used to the idea of controlling your breathing pattern. If you have trouble following along with the default breathing rate, check out the Advanced Guide for instructions on adjusting the breathing pattern.

Turning off the Sleep Sensei

The Sleep Sensei will automatically turn off, but you can also turn it off during coaching by pressing the button. To turn it off on the first menu (lights flashing), either wait 1 minute for it to shut off on its own, or press the button 3 more times or until it turns off. This behavior is explained in the Advanced Guide.

Now that you have gotten the Sleep Sensei up and running, you can check out some of the advanced options and settings!
